I started keeping a paper log of what I read in 2019, mostly so I'd stop forgetting whether I'd already read something. This site is that log, moved online, with the same rule I set for myself then: write down what I actually thought, not what I think I should have thought.
I read mostly literary fiction, with regular detours into science fiction, memoir, and narrative history. I rate on a five-star scale, and I'm stingy with fives — they're reserved for books I'd hand to a stranger unprompted.
I finish almost everything I start. The rare abandoned book gets its own shelf rather than getting quietly deleted — I think it's useful to remember what didn't work, too.
